Waste that comes from construction and demolition is kept out of main engineered landfill site. Instead, construction and demolition material is diverted to its own special area in Fredericton Region Solid Waste’s Alison Boulevard facility.
The reason to separate the construction material from regular waste is two-fold. The first is the size of some of the items such as large pieces of concrete. These large portions of concrete cannot be baled without damaging the machinery and would take up a significant amount of space in the landfill. The second reason is some of items are recyclable such as metals (ie. copper and steel). By keeping construction and demolition waste separate, the lifespan of the landfill is prolonged.
